An interesting read I've embedded below....
In some regards, I believe a few of the predictions are too aspirational. By this I mean 2009 may be too soon to see ideas fully embraced (e.g., think mobile marketing...wasn't 2008 suppose to be THE year?).
I definitely do believe social media will only grow in its use by brands, organizations, and individuals as a relationship builder. If there is a human element in the users approach, the masses will follow. However, this will take time, patience, and a wise marketing strategist who is capable of establishing virtual listening posts and use the info gathered to create value-added consumer focused programming.

Hey Nerissa, I certainly agree that it is a bit ambitious to say 2009 is THE year. I question though whether a sound social marketing strategy is to set up listening posts. Sounds a bit too one-sided to me; isn't the goal of social media to start and maintain a conversation with consumers in as transparent a way possible. Just a thought.
Thanks Ari for the comment!
I'm a firm believer that too many brands jump into social media without first assessing the environment and understanding how best to interact with the intended target audience. This lack of "listening" is what causes brands to make unwise social media decisions that consumers may perceive as gimmicky and insincere. Definitely not the way to start an on-going dialogue.
That being said, in my head but not adequately communicated, creating a conversation with the consumer is key and was loosely reference when I wrote "consumer focused programming."
